Billboard is a weekly American magazine specializing in information on the music industry. On their website, they maintain countless internationally recognized rankings that rank singles and popular albums. The Hot 100 shows the 100 best-selling and most played singles across all genres, ranked by radio airplay audience impressions, as measured by Nielsen Music, sales data as compiled by Nielsen Music, and streaming activity data provided by online music sources.
According to the chart, the number of songs executed by more than one artist has been experiencing a significant increase in recent years. Only in 2018, these collaborations already represent more than 40% of the hit songs. See the time series below.
Another well-known Billboard chart is the Artist 100, a weekly artist chart that ranks the top 100 artists. The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.1
To create the network of successful musical collaborations, the chart was the main source of data. We collected all the artists present in the ranking from July 2014 to July 2018. From the data, besides the network, we obtained some interesting statistics. Some of them were plotted below.
